After decades of eating and cooking soul food (from my own kitchen and those of loved ones), I\u2019m admittedly picky about where I eat it when I go out. When my husband\u2014who\u2019s even more particular than I am\u2014said, \u201cDo what you do and start bringing people there. They deserve it,\u201d I knew Nettie\u2019s Restaurant & Bar<\/a> was something special.<\/p>\n\n\n

Why Nettie\u2019s Stands Out<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Located in Queens Village, Nettie\u2019s isn\u2019t just another restaurant. It\u2019s the kind of homey place where the owner, Danny, stops by your table to chat with genuine warmth. His wife\u2014 one of the chefs\u2014 also sends out food that reminded me of why I love soul food so much in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Food: Southern-Approved<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll be honest: I\u2019m a \u201cfood snob\u201d about certain Southern classics. Collard greens<\/a> and mac & cheese<\/a> can\u2019t just be good\u2014they have to be excellent. Nettie\u2019s passed the test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What We Ordered:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beef Bacon<\/strong> \u2013 Really good. Crispy, flavorful, and a perfect start to the meal.<\/p>\n\n\n

Fried Chicken<\/strong> \u2013 This is where they shine. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and genuinely crispy\u2014not greasy, not heavy, just exactly what fried chicken should be. As someone who [makes my own fried chicken]<\/a>, I appreciate when it\u2019s done right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collard Greens<\/strong> \u2013 Southern-approved. The seasoning was on point, with just the right balance of flavor without being oversalted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mac & Cheese<\/strong> \u2013 Creamy, cheesy, and clearly homemade. No shortcuts here.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Cakes<\/strong> \u2013 We ordered slices to take home, and they were so good my husband insisted I write this review. That\u2019s the highest praise he gives. ( I am definitely going back again for the banana pudding cake!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generous Portions, Reasonable Prices<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In a city where $20 gets you a tiny entr\u00e9e, Nettie\u2019s portions are really generous. You get a great value here. It\u2019s the kind of meal that might leave you with leftovers (which, honestly, won\u2019t last long).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prices are reasonable for NYC, especially considering the quality and portion sizes. I wasn\u2019t able to visit when a friend had a birthday party here. (That\u2019s how I heard about the spot.) I\u2019m glad that I was able to go on a date here, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Atmosphere<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The vibe at Nettie\u2019s is comfortable and welcoming. Great, soulful music plays in the background. It\u2019s not too loud but just right for conversation. It\u2019s the kind of place where you can relax, enjoy your meal, and feel at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you\u2019re dining solo, on a date, or with family, or even looking for a place to throw a small party gathering, the atmosphere works. There\u2019s no airs of pretension here, just good food and genuine hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n
