My family went on our annual apple picking in New York<\/a> day trip to DuBois Farms a couple of weekends ago. After making the ONE apple pie<\/a> that I bake each year during apple season, I had four apples left. Since my husband Reggie loves applesauce, I decided to make an easy homemade chunky applesauce recipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I don\u2019t have an easy recipe for an item, I think of the person who makes the best version of the dish. When it comes to old-fashioned applesauce, Reggie\u2019s Aunt Bertha makes the best applesauce. Fortunately, when I asked her how to make chunky applesauce, she gave me simple stovetop directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aunty\u2019s original homemade apple sauce instructions were \u201cCut up the apples in little pieces. Add some cinnamon and sugar (white sugar or brown sugar). Put some water in the pan to the level of the apples. Boil the apples first and then simmer them on low, stirring occasionally.\u201d The main thing that she emphasized was \u201cSIMMER. SIMMER. SIMMER.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thing about getting a simple recipe from previous generations (parents, aunties, etc.) is that you just have to ask clarifying questions. To get a more exact measurement, I asked questions like, \u201cHow do you cut up the apples?\u201d (Slim slices instead of apple chunks) \u201cHow much cinnamon should I add?\u201d (1\/2 teaspoon) \u201cHow much sugar should I add?\u201d (1\/2 cup) \u201cHow much water should I add?\u201d (Enough to just cover the apples) \u201cDo I cover the simmering apples?\u201d (Yes) \u201cHow long do I simmer the apples?\u201d (One hour)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once I understood the basics of the old-fashioned \u201clow and slow\u201d chunky applesauce recipe, I adapted it to my family\u2019s tastes. I simply added a few things (a little bit of pumpkin spice, fresh lemon juice and vanilla) to make the applesauce taste more like our favorite apple pie filling.
