A couple of weeks ago, I listened to parenting expert Dr. Michele Borba, the author of UnSelfie<\/em><\/a> speak about the importance of child empathy at an event that showcased Hasbro\u2019s Be Fearless Be Kind<\/a> philanthropic initiative. This year, my husband Reggie and I are focusing on helping our kids grow as \u201cgivers\u201d because they receive so many great things and experiences from family, friends and \u201cblogger perks\u201d. Since empathetic people tend to be givers, I wanted to make sure that I didn\u2019t miss anything, so I taped Dr. Borba\u2019s speech about the 4 best ways to teach your kids to be empathetic people.<\/p>\n

Highlights<\/h2>\n

-Real success is marked by kids who reach out to other human beings.<\/p>\n

-The four tips serve as a framework to raise kids who think \u201cwe not me\u201d\/ cultivate empathy in kids.<\/p>\n

-Habits <\/strong>\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Make kindness a habit. Teach kids\u00a0to be good for the right reasons, not just to win a trophy. They need to see examples; hear\u00a0it in our words (i.e. form a family mantra regarding what you stand for as a family); and do it (i.e. family kindness jars and the two kind acts a day rule). These are the three ways that kids learn.<\/p>\n

-Empathy<\/strong> \u2013 Expose kids to real, meaningful experiences (i.e taking care of a pet). Set unplugged time and teach kids to engage by looking at talkers\u2019 eyes. The kind of activities that open up kids\u2019 hearts include\u00a0a \u201cRoots of Empathy\u201d course, a class \u201ctaught\u201d by a\u00a0baby.<\/p>\n

-Rousing<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Kids need rousing examples of goodness. Reading literary fiction (i.e. The Wednesday Surprise<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>about a granddaughter teaching her grandmother how to read) and pointing out good news in the media are a couple of ways to show such images.<\/p>\n

<\/p>

<\/a><\/center>-Opportunities<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Give kids chances\u00a0to be kind. Family charity boxes (where everyone places gently used items and deliver them to the needy together) and year-long give-back projects are a couple of options.\n

If you want to teach your kids to be empathetic (like I do!), these habits will help them become \u201cHero(es) of Heart\u201d and cultivate kind-hearted children. This world definitely needs more empathetic people.
