I was watching television with my son Sean this past weekend when a commercial for the upcoming BFG movie<\/a> came on the screen. Sean mentioned that the movie was based on a book by one of his favorite authors, Roald Dahl. I love that my sons are avid readers<\/a> so I asked Sean to tell me more about the Dahl books so that I could recommend them for your young readers. Below are the 7 greatest Roald Dahl books according to my 9 year-old son Sean.<\/p>\n

7 Greatest Roald Dahl Books<\/h2>\n

In order from favorite to least favorite\u2026<\/p>\n

1. The Witches<\/a><\/em><\/strong>
\n\u201cIt\u2019s a unique story about a boy who meets witches who turn him into a rat. It still has a happy ending though!\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

2. Matilda<\/a><\/em><\/strong>
\n\u201cI like that the girl has powers and that she ends up with a better mom by the end of the story.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

3. James and the Giant Peach<\/a><\/em><\/strong>
\n\u201cI just like that it it\u2019s a funny adventure about a giant peach. Like most Dahl books, it has a happy ending.\u201d
\nKim\u2019s note: I loved this book as a kid too!<\/em><\/p>\n

4. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/a><\/em><\/strong>
\n\u201cI like the concept of a chocolate factory that has crazy machines to make the chocolate. I also like Mr. Willy Wonka because he\u2019s so crazy. \u00a0I also liked how you could see how the kids\u2019 different characters caused different things\u00a0to happen to them. Like all Dahl books, it has a happy ending.\u201d
\nKim\u2019s note: This was one of my favorite childhood books!<\/em><\/p>\n

5. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator<\/a><\/em><\/strong>
\n\u201cI like many of the same things that I did about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I don\u2019t like it as much because the book doesn\u2019t have the different kids (besides Charlie) in it. I do like that this book has Charlie\u2019s other three grandparents and parents in it more. They\u2019re a good addition because the other grandparents never got out of the bed in the first book.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

6. The Fantastic Mr. Fox<\/a><\/em><\/strong>
\n\u201cIt\u2019s a really short story like a lot of the Dahl books. In this one, the fox steals the farmers\u2019 food so the farmers try to kill him. Since the fox and other underground animals can\u2019t go outside, they build underground tunnels to each farm, take the farmers\u2019 food and have a big feast.\u201d
\nKim\u2019s note: I never read this book, but I saw the Fantastic Mr. Fox movie<\/a>. The book sounds better.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

7. The BFG<\/a><\/em><\/strong>
\n\u201cI haven\u2019t read the BFG completely. I\u2019m still at the beginning but I like what I have read so far.\u201d
\nKim\u2019s note: I want to see the upcoming movie now that I know \u201cBFG\u201d stands for \u201cBig Friendly Giant\u201d. Also, I\u2019m sentimental because the book is dedicated to Dahl\u2019s daughter, Olivia, who died of measles encephalitis when she was seven.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

In any event, I like that one of Sean\u2019s favorite things about Roald Dahl\u2019s books are that \u201cthey all have good endings\u201d. I appreciate happy endings. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
