Nikon currently has a webisode series called \u201cLook Good In Pictures\u201d featuring Carson Kressley, the star of Lifetime\u2019s How to Look Good Naked<\/em>. The series has Carson showing viewers how to look their best in various photo situations. As a mom, I was most interested in the work of Carrie Sandoval, a nationally known baby and children\u2019s photographer. (Carrie also has a blog, Captured by Carrie<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

I asked Carrie for some tips on taking pictures of babies and young children and this is what she wrote\u2026<\/p>\n

For babies and toddlers:
<\/u><\/strong>1. Don\u2019t over pose the baby. Have parents hold the baby as they normally would!<\/p>\n

2. Use side lighting with a natural light source for the best contrast and exposure.<\/p>\n

3. Babies look great in the buff, and don\u2019t be afraid to get buff with the baby.<\/p>\n

4. Make the baby comfortable by using a soft beanbag or bassinette. If they feel like they\u2019re being held, they\u2019re more content.<\/p>\n

5. For a happy baby, keep them warm, relaxed and well-fed.<\/p>\n

6. Black and white photos are classic and timeless. They are also a good way to mask a newborn\u2019s skin discoloration.<\/p>\n

7. Use a toy or prop near the camera to capture their attention and focus.<\/p>\n

8. Make sure the background is clear of clutter and toys so the attention stays on the child.<\/p>\n

9. Laughter is contagious \u2013 laugh with your children so the pictures are natural.<\/p>\n

10. Take a picture at their level to give better proportions. A macro lens helps with close-ups.<\/p>\n

For older children:
<\/strong><\/u>1. Take them outdoors to a beautiful park so they don\u2019t feel so \u201ccontained\u201d and they can take a break and run around if need be.<\/p>\n

2. Have some knock knock jokes up your sleeve to keep their attention!<\/p>\n

3. Ask them questions about their friends, their pets, sports\u2026 be their friend!<\/p>\n

These are some great tips (especially since I\u2019m hoping to get a new camera soon!).\n\n\n\n<\/p>
