As a student at Columbia, I majored in History-Sociology and the majority of my classes were focused on African-Americans and\/or women. One thing that stood out to me is that you can tell a lot about a culture and its history by exploring its food. What is now typically called \u201csoul food\u201d had its roots in African staples merged with the inexpensive foods that were given to African-American slaves. <\/p>\n

Although many of the traditional (fried, \u201csmothered\u201d, etc.) soul food recipes are not recommended for daily meals, they make amazing treats. There are also options for making healthier versions of classic dishes. I must admit that I like the real deal though. I don\u2019t eat fried food a lot, but when I do, I enjoy it thoroughly. What can I say? I\u2019m a southern girl. I even worked as a hostess and waitress at the famous Sylvia\u2019s Soul Food Restaurant during college\u2026in part, to enjoy the food!

\nAnyway, I have a question for you. What is your favorite soul food? Are there any soul food\/Southern dishes that you would like to know how to make? <\/strong><\/em> If so, please let me know in the \u201cComments\u201d section below.
